Not All Who Wander Are Lost

(Eingestellt am 4. August 2025, 13:29 Uhr von Allagem)

To date, this has been the single most challenging puzzle-setting journey I’ve ever undertaken. Dozens of successful designs for the first half of the puzzle repeatedly led to impossible scenarios in the second half, and I began to wonder whether the concept I had originally envisioned was even possible.

In the end, I spent several hours writing a brute-force script to verify whether each new deduction I wove into the solution path broke the puzzle, or if a valid layout still existed that could fill the grid. This careful dance between human creativity and computational rigor ultimately culminated in this one-in-a-million layout that is uniquely solvable, logically deducible, and true to my original vision.

After wandering through this grid for hours upon hours, my journey has finally paid off. I’m proud to present my latest puzzle to the world:
Not All Who Wander Are Lost

Good luck!

Normal Sudoku rules apply.
N-Lines: Each white line can be divided into one or more segments such that every segment in the grid sums to the same total.
Even: The digit in the grey square is even.

(To be clear, segments from both the 78!-cell line and the 2-cell line have the same sum!)

P.S. The inspiration for the name of this puzzle comes from a poem by J.R.R. Tolkien about the prophecy of Aragorn’s ascension from a mistrusted, uncelebrated ranger in the North, to the recognition of his birthright as the king of Gondor and vanished Arnor.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
It seemed fitting for such a long and seemingly aimless, but secretly meaningful line. :)

Lösungscode: Row 7 followed by Row 9. 18 digits, no spaces.

A most unexpected journey. Beautiful logic at every turn. From time to time the rugged path filled me with despair and I almost gave up. So glad I - and you - persevered.
